tony bennett, who has been the Cavaliers’ coach since 2009, led the team to an NCAA Championship in 2019
Tony Bennett, the head coach of the Virginia men’s basketball team, decides to retire just ahead of the season campaign.
Virginia’s head coach since 2009 Tony Bennett has also shockingly stepped down, announcing his decision just a few weeks before the season’s tip-off. His impressive teams consistently achieved success in the NCAA tournaments, each victory intact through immense leadership skills, brutal defensive style, and structured coaching style. He departs at a time when the season is just around the corner and the void seems to be strategic, it is the East Coast conference that is poised to change. Virginia’s fans however will never forget Bennett.
One of the most successful college basketball coaches in the country, Bennett led the Virginia Cavaliers for 15 years and won the NCAA Championship in 2019. During his time, the 55-year-old won 6 ACC regular-season championships, 2 ACC tournament championships, and took the team to ten NCAA tournaments. His accomplishments in’12 and ‘21 earned him Naismith Coach of the Year honors for which he has become a college basketball coaching legend.
