History of the FIFA World Cup formats for men’s tournaments
World Cup history has stayed fairly static and changed quite a bit compared to the original tournament in 1930. In 1998 FIFA Cub 24 teams were qualified and a total of 24 teams was at the 1994 World Cup in the United State. At the 1982 World Cup where participation was increased from 16 to 24, and four groups of three were then drawn. That second group stage sent the four group winners to the semifinal. In the 1986 World Cup participation remained at 24 and the format changed to just one group stage, still with six groups of four. In the 2022 FIFA Cup there were 31 places and in the 2026 FIFA Cup there increased and will be played 48 teams.
